WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Museum of Contemporary art

Tour of the Museum with our docent Kate.  Contemporary art is always challenging for some of our students, especially as it veers away from representation of real objects/places/ people and becomes more about ideas, concepts and emotion.

  1. I feel I struggled a lot with understanding contemporary art. I am not an artsy person myself, so maybe that is a small reasoning as to why I couldn't get into the contemporary art museum. I do appreciate the art that many of the artists do, but some of the art just didn't scream "art" to me. I feel art is either in your blood or it is not. I am still appreciative that I was able to go to the museum and get a feel of what the museum of contemporary art in Chicago was like.
