WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Second City on Susan's Birthday

Chicago's Second City is great place to explore a fun and entertaining part of this city's history.  On the second night of our trip, we ate dinner at Corcoran's, across from Second City.  They always treat us well and serve generous portions of food.  We can't take photos during the Second City performance, but here's a look at the group singing happy brithday to Susan just before the show.

Second City Improv

The famous comedy venue did not disappoint Tuesday night. No wonder so many famous comedians come out of this Chicago institution. Hilarious- they skewer everything from Chicago winters to contemporary political leaders and gender relationships. The students were laughing out loud the whole night. We had dinner at Corcoran's across the street beforehand - juicy pub burgers. Try the Angus with fresh avocado. After the comedy club several students made their way to Wrigleyville - an area of the city near Wrigley Field. Between the Cubs game and folks watching the Chicago hockey team in the Stanley Cup Playoffs - it was apparently a pretty lively place.
