WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Dim Sum and Tour of Chinatown

Folks had a good time trying something different
On our last morning we ate Dim Sum together in Chinatown and took a brief walk around the area before returning to the hotel to catch the bus to Union Station for the long train ride home.

David's special order - I liked it.  Sort of a soft gummy worm texture with heavy sesame taste.
That's it for this year - on to planning Montreal

  1. Trisha Simmons: Final Reflection

I had a blast in Chicago. Everything we did was great! Yes, even Mia and the Magoos....I appreciated the visual beauty of the film, but agree that it was slow.

The tour of the Art Institute Museum was awesome, and like everyone else I could have spent hours there. Second City was absolutely great! I think doing that early in the trip was a good idea too because it livened everyone up. And, even though it was not what we were supposed to see, Million Dollar Quartet was one of my favorite activities.

The course definitely helped me explore parts of Chicago I would not have visited had I traveled on my own. I have been to Chicago before, it was a spur of the moment trip and we didn't really know where to go, this trip helped a lot. I think the activities fit well with our pre-trip discussions and gave everyone a better understanding of urban culture.

I know I had a great time and made some awesome new friends. Thanks for all of the hard work you put into planning the trip. I wish I could do Montreal next semester!

  2. Dim Sum was very interesting. I love to try new foods but most of the stuff we ate I probably never would have tried on my own. I can't say that I loved anything I ate but the experience itself was great!

  3. I also agree with Jennifer. I would have never tried Dim Sum on my own. However, I was greatful for the expeirence because I went into the day thinking I was going to hate it. I even thought I was going to hate it after I looked at the food. Though I was wrong and liked a majority of the items. After eating the Dim Sum it reminded me not to judge things before I give them a try.

  4. I really enjoyed going to Dim Sum because I love to try new things, especially food! I think it is so important to be open to other people's cultures and other ways of doing things. Dim Sum had all sorts of foods... some that did not look very appetizing and some that the name alone made you want to turn away. It was definitely a neat experience to just take it all in and experience china town as a whole. (I really liked the custard dessert too!) -Whitney P.

  5. China Town was one of my favorites. As an Urban culture tour it was great to see not only contrasts with good old KC, but with the variety of ethnic cultures in Chicago. The Dim Sum was an adventure all of it's own. I loved the small portions so we could try everything, I will probably never order just sweet and sour chicken again! I liked our impromptu tour, it was shorter than some of the others, so we had time to explore and appreciate the art, some of which traveled all the way from China to join it's people here. Sara B

  6. Eating Dim Sum in Chinatown was definitely the most "interesting" learning experience in China.

All of our other stops helped me get a fuller view of Chicago, from the performances to the Gallery visits to the tours of Millenium Park and the Architecture Tour. All of these, while informative, were also somewhat expected - going into a city as big as Chicago and with Chicago's history, you expect those things - fabulous archtecture, art, music, and theatre.

I liked that we got to explore a new part of Chicago culture through taste. I hadn't expected to emjoy Dim Sum, but I ended up trying a lot and liking most of it. Chinatown is a vital part of Chicago's culture and it's actual space, and I feel like we were immediately immersed in it with the Dim Sum.

On a side note, an unofficial part of the tour that I think helped my understanding of Chicago was the Chicago transportation system, particularly the busses and the el. It gave the city a completely different feel from Kansas City, and is uniquely different than other big cities.

  7. Peter K:
Eating at Dim Sum was a very memorable experience and really helped broaden my horizon on different foods. I'll definetly be a lot more open to trying foreign foods in the future.

My faveorite experience was definetly the 2nd City Comedy Club. I havent laughed so hard for 3 hours in my entire life and their mix of clever Saturday Night Live equivalent skits and improv skills made it a must-see the next time I come back. The architecture boat tour was my second faveorite part of the trip.

The public public transportation system was one of the most efficient, clean, and convenient that I have seen in any city I've traveled to.

This trip was most definetly the best class-based trip I've ever been on. I had the privaledge of falling in love with the city of Chicago and it wouldnt have been possible if not for this trip.

  8. I loved everything we did in Chicago. The trip was full of wonderful things that many of them, I never would have done otherwise! Especially eating Dim sum!! =)

My favorite experience was the musical play at the Apollo Theatre, "The Million Dollar Quartet." I loved that such a talented performance could take place in such a small venue. I love the hidden treasures of the city. I never would have known to go see that play at that theatre!!

I was also greatly interested in the architecture of the city. Everywhere that we visited, there was a significant history to the building. I was amazed to learn about the Chicago fire. I was unaware of the extent of this fire and the damage that it cause to the city. And I was inspired to learn that such a beautiful city came out of such destruction.

Yesterday, a tornado hit Joplin, MO, which is very close to my home town of Springfield, MO. I used this trip to Chicago as a light of hope for these people in Joplin, remembering the fire in Chicago and that maybe the people of Joplin can build something good from this devastation. Thankfully everyone I know in Joplin survived, but there were some very close calls.

Back to the trip, I feel that we experienced a very educational experience of the city. We had knowledgeable and capable teachers, as well as a very educated and interested class that enhanced my learning experience. Thank you everyone! I had a blast!
