WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Second City on Susan's Birthday

Chicago's Second City is great place to explore a fun and entertaining part of this city's history.  On the second night of our trip, we ate dinner at Corcoran's, across from Second City.  They always treat us well and serve generous portions of food.  We can't take photos during the Second City performance, but here's a look at the group singing happy brithday to Susan just before the show.

  1. I would have to say that the Second City performance was my favorite activity. It was hillarious and fun for all of us to watch. It was interesting to see the Improv along with the comedy acts.

  2. Second City was so fun and entertaining; it was hands down my favorite part of the trip. You can't go wrong with 2 hours of nonstop laughing! They included quite a bit of chicago baseball, political events occurring lately, and other things in their skits that allowed us to see the city more through their eyes. I could sort of get a sense of what was important to them there and a lot of the issues they worry about in their city. So, although it was a comedy show, we still learned about the city's culture and what the people there feel they have to deal with at the same time. Again, I absolutely loved this part of the trip! -Whitney P.

  3. The 2nd City Improv was an incredible experience that i will never forget. The atmosphere of the place was like none other, and the way they presented themselves was unique. The skits had a lot of culture in them tied to Chicago, and they worked in other elements of the area as well. I haven't laughed as hard as I did while watching the performance, and it showed the raw talent the performers had. I also really enjoyed seeing all the previous performers that have now become huge actors in Hollywood, and how they got their start at 2nd City. The trip as a whole was fantastic and with it being a group, it worked out great.
