WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

  1. While visiting Chicago , I felt that majority of the events that we went to were very interesting. But out of all the things we attended, I thought the cruise on the Chicago River and Lake Michigan was the most interesting. It was really interesting seeing and learning about Chicago's famous buildings and how the Chicago River is very important to Chicago's history. I also liked how we were able too see the state of Indiana , when we were on the cruise in Lake Michigan. Going on the cruise was not also a learning experience but a great way too see the beautiful city of Chicago!!!!!

  2. I felt as though the boat ride around the city of Chicago was one of my favorite activities; The boat tour allowed us to view the city from end to end, all from a new perspective. The differences and orgins of all the downtown buildings are all unique with different stories and structural differences. The skyline was beautiful and it was also a fun, relaxing, learning experience. It seems as though most enjoyed this part of the trip; the boat ride was a different pace and a new view of the city.

  3. The boat tour, in my opinion, was the most relaxing and interesting part of the trip. I enjoyed the tour guides knowledge and expertise of the architecture in Chicago. The ride down the river onto the lake was so relaxing and gave me time to look around and take in the city and enjoy the people I was on the trip with. Overall, I would do the wendella cruise again as I feel I would discover new things about the city I missed the first time around.

  4. I learned more about the city of Chicago in the boat tour. I learned about the buildings, the changes over time in history in the city and the influences in building architecture.
It was entertaining, interesting, and nice way to spend afternoon in Chicago. I really enjoyed the boat tour.

  5. This was one of the most educational points of the entire trip for me. From a factual standpoint about Chicago the boat tour and tour of the cultural center were the top dogs. I believe that I learned the most of modern day Chicago and how the city developed over time on the boat trip. I found it interesting the numerous different challenges which architects ran into throughout the building process on many of the buildings. Not to mention just how beautiful the view of the city from both the lake and the river were.
