WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Jersey Boys

Wow!  What a great performance - the musical Jersey Boys at the Bank of America Theatre on our last night in Chicago.

  1. Out of all of the exciting and wonderful things we experienced during this trip, I would have to say the performance of Jersey Boys was my favorite. The outstanding music revived the memories of me and my dad cruising around in his '68 Olds Cutlass convertible with the top down and the Frankie and the Four Seasons playing in the 8-track. Also, the performance instills the fact that Chicago has a rich and vibrant theatre culture that is second only to New York. It was really interesting to see how the people of Chicago love theatre and love their city. Even though this show had been playing for several weeks, the place was still packed. Shannon D.

  2. Just as Shannon mentioned above, I found Jersey Boys to be the most fascinating event we did on our trip. Yes I enjoyed much more of what we attended, but Jersey Boys excited me and even exceeded my expectations. I have never been very big on Broadway shows until recently. Jersey Boys was only the second Broadway show I have seen and I can't explain the rush I got while watching it. I loved seeing the audience enjoy the performance just as much as I did. There were a couple of songs that gave me goose bumps just hearing members of the band hit certain notes. Listening to my surroundings before, during, and after the performance showed me that the people of Chicago were just as excited and fascinated as I was. The theatre was absolutely breathtaking and it was great knowing that not just we tourists like to explore the theatre culture of Chicago, but also the people of Chicago do too. The theatre has very important meaning to everyone who attends it, and as for me, I want to continue exploring my interest in theatre as a result of this show. Summar F.

  3. I must agree with both Shannon and Summar! Jersey Boys was my favorite event of all! I knew nothing about Jersey Boys before attending but it didn't take long before I was singing and dancing along! The atmosphere was awesome, and the actors were great (not too bad to look at either!)! I was so excited that most of the songs performed exist on my Ipod! The show itself was a great combination of music and comedy! Aside from Jersey Boys I also enjoyed Millenium Park, the art museums, and Second City!!! Chicago is a great city, full of fun and excitement! A must see in my book! And I definitely plan on taking another trip very soon to explore even more!
