WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Second City Improve

You can't take photos at Second City when the show starts, so here's the empty stage just before showtime.  The group had dinner at Corcoran's and then enjoyed the historic Second City Improv that has birthed many a famous comedian.

  1. This was by far my most favorite event in Chicago. This was even better than the improv in Montreal which I thought was fantastic. I was amazed that they could rap, dance, draw, play guitar and be so funny at the same time. They put it all together so well and on the spot! I loved how they took lyrics of songs and built them into the skits. It was funny to see how many things could spring off of the snack-Cheez Its.-Garrett Durbin

  2. Even though I was late getting to Corcorans I really enjoyed the food there, I feel that it was good to bond with a few of my classmates and get to know a little more about them. I enjoyed the second city improv. I feel that it was hilarious yet informative. I liked how they incorporated issues within American culture into their act. The environment was really relaxed and easy going environment even though some of the topics were heavy. two acts in particular that I enjoyed were the cell phone act and the rap. the cell phone act really showed me how this generation is into technology and cell phones that life is simply passing us by. I felt that there should be times where we simply don't want to use our cell phones and enjoy life for what it is. I also liked the rap because it was interesting to see the perspectives of two different men from different backgrounds. Different things affect people differently and the rap really allowed the audience to see that in a subtle yet strong way.

  3. I don't think anything could top the performance we saw in Chicago. I first though the deep dish pizza was good until we made it to Second City. This was my first time seeing a show live like this and was not sure what to expect. The performance had me laughing from beginning to end and was impressed with the actors talents in improve. I would recommend to anyone to see this show and made me proud to say I was in the same comedy club that some of the greats started at. Overall, this was pure comedy gold and am going to be on the look out for more improve shows!

  4. After doing my report on Second City in class, I was very excited to see the performance, and I was not disappointed in the least. It was really incredible to see the actors work off of each other so well and be so in tune with each other. One of my favorite parts of the performance was when one of the actors was telling his illustrated story of Cheezus, and two other actors broke character and had to stifle their laughter. Knowing that the actors were completely engaged and having a blast the whole time made the performance even more fun to watch.
Overall, the Second City performance was quite possibly my favorite part of the entire trip!
