WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Monteal at night

  1. It was clear that Montreal is very into visual arts. The fact that they had projectors on multiple buildings that projected designs and even short films was amazing. It had to have taken a lot of time to get the projectors set up just right and film all of the short plays that were shown. The short films gave a glimpse into the history on Montreal. Some of the history were positive aspects like Jackie Robins and then negative aspects like the slave that was accused for burning down the homes. Montreal at night is very impressive with their visual arts and no other city I have been to compares.

  2. I feel that a lot of this trip was centered around the architecture of the city. The walking tour was quite interesting with all of the historic facts that Michell had to share with us. He told us how to tell where the houses used to be and where they have added on. Then later on in the trip we saw the building with the projected story of the fire. I was so glad that we had the knowledge now to know where the old house was and the projected fire was so intense. That story was very intriguing. Looking through the old theater and seeing the outside of some of these amazing buildings really made the trip enjoyable.

  3. Seeing the projections on the buildings was truly a unique expirence. We do not have things like this in kansas city and i thorough enjoyed seeing the historic displays throughout the city. Seeing the history being told through lights and visuals is great for all ages in the city. Montreal is a very luminious city and the lights were a very cool expirence!

  4. I loved getting to learn about all the architecture when we were in Montreal, the thing I found the most interesting was how they would add to buildings and build around the old ones so one house might have two different colored bricks, this was portrayed very well in the projection on the building showing the fire and how it adds to the cities culture.

  5. The old architecture and modern lighting were a great combo. I literally took pictures of everything that was lit up at night. The projections on the building was something had never seen before, some were just kid of cool and others really hit hard.
