WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

The Mile End Food tour with Justin

I think we all learned a lot about this Montreal neighborhood from our passionate guide. And enjoyed some great food samples.

  1. The food tour was my favorite activity. I love trying new food and what better place to do that than a different country. The first stop, The Green Panther was probably the most unique food I tried on this trip. I had never tried a vegan restaurant before. It would be hard to choose my favorite between the hot chocolate and the ice cream. I loved that hot chocolate so much that I went back and bought two cans to take home. I learned a lot about the different types of food that is popular. We also learned a lot about the neighborhood. Seeing the different housing was amazing. It was really neat to learn that the rent in that neighborhood is comparable to some places in KC. Dustin said the rents averaged around $1400. Trying some of Montreal's best food stops was great and I think food tours are a must!

  2. This was my second favorite thing on the trip. I loved how everything was an example of the culture that montreal has. We were able to walk up to different places and get samplings of the hottest things. It was a wonderful way to get a "taste" of what montreals real culture was about. I was super pleased with this and would love to do it again sometime. I think that this would be something I would recommend to anytime this trip comes back. It was awesome!

  3. I absolutely loved the food tour! The feel of the resteraunts in a city tells a story of the city. I loved enjoying new foods that i have never had and seeing the city like a local would. Our tour guide was awesome. Montreals food selection was very diverse and appetizing.

  4. I loved getting a chance to experience some of Montreal's favorite restaurants. This was a unique experience for me because I'm pretty picky about food so it was a chance for me to open up and try new things and I was surprised at how good everything was! It was a good way to learn more about Montreal's culture. I felt like our tour guide did a great job he taught us a lot during the tour and I really liked how he gave us the full story about every restaurant we sampled from. It was fun and I would recommend it for other trips!

  5. This was another one of my favorite things on the trip and most definitely one of the most informative. It was awesome to get to walk around and try all of the foods that people love there. It was all very good and the tour was informative and really tied all of it in to the culture of Montreal.
