WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Our guide show us Montreal's free boxes where people leave items they no longer need for others to take

  1. The food tour was very informative. Justin was very passionate about Montreal and the area we toured through. I enjoyed learning how the locals' homes are set up. I also found it interesting that the back alleyways were used for trash and other chores that people didn't want others to see. The food was also amazing, though I still think New York has the better bagel!

  2. I loved the food tour. I enjoyed seeing the residential neighborhoods of Montreal. All of the different cultures that were intertwined into one small neighborhood was amazing. As you walked down a street you would see an Indian restaurant, then Mexican, then Vegan, and so on and so fourth. It was nice to see how the other side of town lives. We were in the city for most of our trip, but the city is never somewhere I would want to live, so it was nice to actually see a house, and families living in a neighborhood. Everyone seemed very open to their neighbors. Once street had predominantly Jewish families, and another street would have a large Catholic church. I thought it was amazing how different backgrounds and cultures came together to make one neighborhood. The food was also amazing. We tried vegan, italian, bagels, meat/cheese, and ice cream. All were delicious, and everyone was very kind about explaining their store.

  3. This tour was so cool. I really enjoyed the character of that area with such a variety of cultures mixed together. The variety of food couldn't have been any better. The bagels were my favorite and the little hint of honey made them that much better. The free boxes were interesting, I had never seen anything like that with that concept.

  4. I absolutely loved the food tour. I will definitely do one of these again if they are offered every place that I travel. I really enjoyed getting to taste the food that was most popular around the city and being able to learn about the food and the history of the buildings at the same time. I don't think that I can pick a favorite of the food that we tried, it was all amazing. I think the best park of the tour was our tour guide, he was so knowledgeable and kind. He really made the tour so enjoyable. I don't think that anything was very challenging for this one, since we had a tour guide to explain everything to us, and the food was all good.
