WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Food tour at Jean Talon market

Loved walking through this market with our guide Jeremy and sampling crepes,  rye bread, apple cider,  cheese and sausages. Then a short walk to little Italy for cannoli. One of my favorite activities

  1. This was one of my favorite activities for sure! Jeremy was very knowledgeable and was a fantastic tour guide! I felt like I learned a lot while really enjoying myself at the same time. The food was very different but I really like it too. Going to little Italy was a neat experience as well! I chuckled a little when he started talking about the mafia when we went to the chuch there. If I ever get a chance to go back to Montreal, I will make sure I do another tour through the Jean Talon market!

    1. I really enjoyed the food tour as well through the Jean Talon market. I thought it was a good was to learn the history of Montreal, Canada while also getting to enjoy new things such as the crepes and wine. I also thought it was cool how with their fruits and veggies they use a logo to know if its local products or imported from another place.

  2. I like to think that the best way to experience a culture is through the food they eat, and the way the prepare it. Taking this tour of the Jean Talon Market was the perfect way to do this. Walking through this market you can see the different foods. There were a large amount of stands with fresh fruit and vegetables, but then you see the stands that would not be at a typical US market. Our first stop at the crepes was definitely something different. It's not too often you will see a crepe with salmon and goat cheese anywhere in the states. I really enjoyed getting to try the different foods as we took our tour. The cider with the cheese was an interesting combination. The meats that we tried we delicious, but most certainly different from the meats we have here. I learned a lot about the culture of Montreal from this tour, and not just because our tour guide, Jeremy, had such an interest in the beer. Definitely one of my favorite parts of the trip.

    1. I agree Trent - that's why I teach a Food & Culture course, so this was a favorite stop of mine.

  3. I also loved the market! It was a great way to learn and experience more about the culture. All of the food was delicious. My favorite detail of this portion was that they label whether or not the food you're buying is local or imported. I wish we had more of that here in our grocery stores.

  4. The Market of Jean Talon was one of my very favorite experiences of the trip to Montreal. Everything at the market was displayed so beautifully and it was clean. It was clear allot of pride was taken by the vendors in the products they sold.
Going to the market was not like going to the store. This was a half day activity in itself for the local people. Spending time talking to the vendors and getting advice from them was very much part of the trip to the market. The tour guide did a great job of including the cultural differences that had an influence in the area. Heather P.
