WELCOME

Welcome to the Urban Culture course at Avila University created by Susan Lawlor and Dotty Hamilton.  We travel with our students to great cities to explore art museums, engage with the architecture, study the local film and music venues, and experience the ethnic enclaves as a way to learn about the culture of urban spaces and the interaction of art and environment.  It's a fun, intense learning environment.

Notre Dame Basilica

The evening light show at this beautiful church was a combination history lesson and architectural display

  1. This was definitely my favorite historical part of the trip. I thought the projection and the screens in all the corners as well as reflecting off the ceiling was incredible. I think my jaw dropped open when they released all of the tapestry on the side and lowered the projection. The inside front of the Notre Dame Basilica is astoundingly beautiful. The way they lit up all of the different sculptures and different sections while the characters in the film were talking about them was really helpful. The monologues in the show were really informative and I learned a lot of new things that day--and it was presented in a way that really held your attention, which I certainly appreciated after a long day.

By far the most ornate, beautiful church I have been in to date. I'm so glad this was a part of the trip!

  2. I too, felt this was the most beautiful and ornate church I have ever been in. When I sit in my little Catholic church this Sunday, I am sure my mind will wander to that awe-inspiring ceiling, stained glass, and the impressive light show. If Father Rogers could say mass in this church, I know we would all listen! -Garrett D

  3. The basilica was an absolutely amazing sight. I couldn't believe that people actually weekly go to their church service in this church. While taking pictures, I just stopped because there was no way to capture how amazing it actually was. Not to mention the building is almost 200 years old. The basilica amazed me because every inch had a precise detail to it; it was almost overwhelming! The light show was an interesting way of getting to see it as well. I was not expecting the screens to drop and show the building! Not only the interior was breathtaking; the outside architecture was amazing! The basilica also fit into Old Montreal perfectly, I loved it!

  4. The Notre Dame Basilica was my favorite architectural pieces of the trip we got to see and I also felt that the light show was a good way to learn the history behind this beautiful church as well. Before the light show started I was a little disappointed because I thought I was not going to have the opportunity to see the beautiful artwork, sculptures, etc.. But I enjoyed learning the history while they uncovered and revealed the beauty behind each screen.

  5. The Notre Dame Basilica was astounding. It was beautiful on the outside but words cannot even describe the exquisiteness of the interior. I was disappointed upon arrival because we could not see the front, however, those toughts quickly disappeared when the church was revealed. The amount of detail was beyond belief. I loved how the lights accentuated each detail all those way to the organ. I have never seen anything like it. Stunning. I also cannot imagine worshiping in that church every Sunday. How fortunate those people are.
